About Journal@rchive

Journal@rchive and the Electronic Archive Initiative
Journal@rchive is an archive site of J-STAGE operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). On Journal@rchive, academic journals scanned through the Electronic Archive Initiative are released from their first issues, including those issued in the 19th century. The Initiative commenced by JST in FY2005 aiming at two goals: (1) to preserve of academic heritages of Japan, and (2) to further promote worldwide distribution of Japanese research results.

Background of the Initiative
In recent years, many American and European academic publishers have started to scan back issues of their journals to make them available online, but most academic societies in Japan do not have resources to follow the trend. Upon request from the societies, the Japanese government decided to ask JST to take on the task, using its experience acquired through the operation of J-STAGE.

Journals on this Site
The journals to be applied to the Electronic Archive Initiative will be selected every year. To select journals in the view of scientific profession, the committee for journal selection has been organized with the cooperation of the Science Council of Japan and related organizations.
The committee selected 74 journals in FY2005, and 65 journals in FY2006. In FY2007, 58 journals were selected.

How Journals Get Online
The journals are scanned cover-to-cover in high resolution for preservation and the full-text of the articles are compiled into PDF with OCR texts. The abstracts and references are available in HTML, the same as for the current J-STAGE, with links to citing/cited articles found in J-STAGE journals/CrossRef participating journals and secondary database services like PubMed. OCR full-texts will also be available for searching together with the current volumes.
